I was tutoring a fifth grader today and had to teach myself a new common core method of multiplication on the fly and I blame the state of California

What frustrated me was when I finally figured out one of the methods they used, the first thing that popped in my head wasn’t that the method itself was bad per se, it was that it was completely asinine to use it in such a simple math problem.
