full offense but I am extremely jealous of people whose kids love to be read to. We have been trying to read to Butt and Chubbs since their respective births but you know what they do instead??? Butt throws a fit because she wants to figure out the words herself, and Chubbs eats the paper. I’m raising illiterate cavebabies and they are having the time of their life.
Okay, I’m a children’s librarian, so this is my JAM, but if this opinion is unwanted, pleaseplease ignore it. You all should check out board books from the library for Chubbs! Eating books is actually great because it shows that she is interested in them and wants to play with them. If she’s not ready to sit and listen, but she enjoys playing with books, it’s better to let her have fun with books because she’ll grow up knowing that books are fun and not a chore.
For Butt, maybe you could look into wordless picture books (Molly Idle has the CUTEST ones), or ones with very few words. The latter makes pointing out words a lot more manageable so that she can work on her letter awareness and figuring out the words for herself. The former will give her face time with a book without the stress of not being able to read all the words.
Anyway, like I said, if I’m butting in where I shouldn’t, ignore me. I just REALLY love talking about early literacy!
I don’t mind at all. I actully have a lot of their books still packed up so I may just take out the appropriate ones for each. They have a few in the home but not all of them. And we still need to check out our local library too!
