Oooooh that. Yeah it’ supposed to be a respect thing I guess, I have no idea why otherwise. I am but a humble peasant woman and have had no reason nor opportunity to greet anyone higher up than a priest.
@patron-saint-of-smart-asses it stems from the medieval and ancient times when one would kiss their lord/king’s rings in a sign of respect and loyalty. It became a thing with the bishops and pope, as a ring was a big deal back then and most rings carried seals and insignias. I’m no expert, but I remember my bishop taking his ring off and explaining it to me and my two siblings when I was but a humble altar server. Pretty neat history.
