Evidence of Faith: Martin is very open & loving about his Catholic faith, & many sources will confirm this. When he was on Inside the Actors Studio in 2003, he explained that growing up, he attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dayton, & that he attended Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School (the first part is also confirmed in this My Dayton Daily News article). Also in his Inside the Actors Studio interview, Martin explained that it was through fellow Catholic & activist Dorothy Day & the Catholic Worker Movement that Martin dedicated himself to social justice. According to a Los Angeles Times article, Martin still continues supporting the Catholic Workers Movement. Also according to a Telegraph article, Martin is certainly a devout Catholic, & it became that way after a series of meaningful conversations with director Terrence Malick, director of Badlands. In his own words, “The whole journey is about showing our brokenness….It’s about opening up and being human. And that’s what spirituality really is. It’s humanity.” He also stated in an interview with The Catholic Report that he’s pro-life, & he is also a recipient of the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame, which is one of the highest honors an American Catholic can have (this information can be seen here). Additionally, he continues to this day supporting many Catholic causes, & has been granted many high honors for his contributions. One can also see Martin’s strong Catholic faith in the film The Way, which details a spiritual pilgrimage & was directed by Emilio Estevez.
