I think what paved the way for the worship of equality is the denial of the existence of Hell. Not only does it diminish the concept of virtue, but it essentially made all system of ethics on par with each other. If there is no authoritative code of ethics that guides you to Heaven, then all code of ethics lead you to a void at the end of this life.
