why give somebody a gift card when you can just give them the money

The way I see it is that you’re giving them the gift of treating themselves to something they enjoy.

If you give someone $50, they might feel guilty if they do something fun with it rather than putting it in savings or using it for something practical.

The gift card says “go ahead, treat yourself, do something fun for you.”

I appreciate gift cards because my husband and I are very frugal, so extra income often goes to savings rather than fun stuff. Gift cards give us the excuse to go out and splurge a little.
