We call it tithing and still use 10% as the standard because it IS in the Old Testament, but we don’t “charge” anything, all donations are given freely as an act of charity and we can offer as much or little as we wish
I’ve never heard of any parish ‘charging’ a tithe.
I do think however that we Catholics ought to seriously consider how much we give.
Fr. Bob Bedard, the founder of the order, The Companions of the Cross wrote the following:
“God’s Old Testament people had some very concrete commands from him about what they were to contribute to his work. It was 10% of everything. And that meant 10% of their gross. Off the top. There is no record that Jesus ever abrogated this teaching. In fact, he urged people to even greater generosity. The early Church went even further. The earliest Christians made a radical commitment to share all things in common.
I am convinced God still wants his tithe…”
